Roman Kolbe: The path to artificial intelligence
Roman Kolbe, who has been with Provinzial for 13 years, began his career in actuarial fields after studying mathematics and statistics. Today, he heads up the "AI & Data Development" unit and has been driving the digital transformation at Provinzial ever since.
AI at Provinzial: an overview
The use of AI at Provinzial began in the actuarial department with machine learning and data science. This has now developed into a comprehensive digital transformation that integrates IT and specialist departments. Provinzial's IT platform is based on Kubeflow, enables the training and productive use of models, and also uses external AI models such as GPT.
The role of GPT and generative AI
One highlight of the AI strategy is the development of a dedicated GPT platform that makes the OpenAI models secure and usable within the company. This platform, which currently has around 1,500 users, enables data to be processed securely and opens up a wide range of use cases, from document summaries to tariff comparisons.
Challenges and opportunities during implementation
The introduction of AI brought with it challenges such as data protection, IT security and co-determination. An AI guideline, developed in collaboration with the works council and an expert, regulates the use and ethical aspects of AI in the company. The flexible and agile approach enables Provinzial to react quickly to technological developments.
Positive effects on the world of work
The use of AI aims to automate routine tasks and make employees' work easier. One example is claims processing, where AI helps to quickly find and analyze relevant documents. This not only increases efficiency, but also improves job satisfaction.
Cooperation as the key to success
Close cooperation between specialist departments and IT is a decisive factor for the success of AI implementation. The dovetailing of expertise and clear requirements enables the targeted and successful implementation of AI projects.
Conclusion: courage to change and flexibility
Roman Kolbe emphasizes the need to have a broad base and remain flexible. The dynamic development of AI technologies requires continuous learning and adaptation. Provinzial has shown how traditional companies can master the leap into the digital future through innovative approaches and collaboration.
